This 8-day Jbel Saghro trekking adventure begins in Ouarzazate and takes you deep into one of southern Morocco’s most striking mountain regions. After reaching the village of Tagdilt, the trek crosses volcanic plateaus and passes the famous rock towers of Bab n’Ali before continuing through mineral valleys and rugged landscapes towards the summit of Igli. The route then descends through dramatic gorges, palm-filled oases, and remote valleys where encounters with Aït Atta nomadic families are possible. With mules transporting your main luggage and a local trekking team accompanying you, the journey combines spectacular mountain scenery, cultural encounters, and nights beneath the stars before returning to Ouarzazate.

This 8-day trek takes you through the spectacular landscapes of Jbel Saghro, a rugged volcanic massif between the High Atlas and the Sahara. Far from Morocco’s busier trekking routes, you’ll cross mineral valleys, volcanic plateaus, narrow gorges, and dramatic rock formations while spending peaceful nights in remote mountain bivouacs. The journey includes the ascent of Igli at 2,271 metres, panoramic views stretching towards the High Atlas and desert, encounters with Aït Atta nomadic families, and the opportunity to experience the silence and beauty of the Saghro under a spectacular star-filled sky.
Your Jbel Saghro adventure begins with your arrival in Ouarzazate. You will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, enjoy some time to relax and discover the city at your own pace. In the evening, meet your trekking team for a briefing about the route, conditions, and preparations for the days ahead.

After breakfast, leave Ouarzazate and travel approximately two and a half hours to the village of Tagdilt, where you will meet the muleteers and cooking team who will accompany you throughout the trek. From Tagdilt, begin walking across the impressive volcanic plateaus of Jbel Saghro, gradually entering the remote landscapes of the massif. Continue towards the famous rock formations of Bab n’Ali, one of the most spectacular landmarks in the region, before continuing to Almou n’Ouarg where your first mountain bivouac will be prepared.

Continue deeper into the Saghro massif as the trail crosses broad mineral valleys surrounded by dramatic rocky peaks and volcanic formations. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote, with striking contrasts between the dark volcanic rock and the open mountain terrain. Enjoy lunch in the heart of the mountains before continuing towards the Afourar Plateau, where you’ll spend another peaceful night beneath the open sky.

Today’s trek is one of the highlights of the journey as you climb towards Igli, the highest point of the route at 2,271 metres. The ascent leads through rugged mountain terrain before reaching the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across Jbel Saghro, the High Atlas, and, on clear days, the distant landscapes towards the desert. After enjoying the summit, descend towards Ousdidene, where your tented camp awaits.

Elevation: +600 m / -700 m
Leave Ousdidene and continue through narrow mountain gorges and dramatic rock formations. The route gradually leads towards lower landscapes where palm groves and small desert oases begin to appear. Along the way, you may have the opportunity to meet members of the Aït Atta nomadic communities, offering a fascinating glimpse into traditional life in this remote region. Continue towards Ighazzoun, where your next bivouac will be set up.

Today’s route alternates between open plateaus, valleys, and small mountain passes as you continue through the increasingly desert-like landscapes of Jbel Saghro. The trail offers constantly changing scenery, with rugged volcanic formations and wide open horizons. Continue towards Handour, where you’ll spend your final major night in the mountains beneath the spectacular Saghro sky.

After breakfast, enjoy a final short walk to the meeting point before leaving the mountain trails behind. Transfer towards Nkob, a beautiful oasis town known for its palm groves and traditional kasbahs. Stop for lunch before continuing the journey back to Ouarzazate. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and enjoy a comfortable evening after several days of trekking and camping in the Saghro mountains.
