The Saghro Sahara Nomad Trek takes you across Morocco’s rawest landscapes — from the volcanic ridges of Jbel Saghro to the golden dunes of the Sahara. This 8-day journey follows ancient pastoral paths used by Amazigh semi-nomadic communities who migrate seasonally between mountain and desert.

You walk through stone plateaus shaped over hundreds of millions of years, camp in silence beneath vast skies, and finish your journey riding camels into the dunes at sunset. The Saghro Sahara Nomad Trek blends geology, culture, and wilderness into one continuous story — from rock to sand.

This is not a crowded Atlas trail. It is a quieter Morocco, defined by space, wind, and horizon.

Itineraries

Day

Arrive in Marrakech

Transfer to riad. Welcome briefing for your Saghro Sahara Nomad Trek.

Day 2

Marrakech to Nkob – Where Mountain Meets Desert

Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), then descend toward the Draa Valley. Arrive in Nkob, a palm oasis village known for its earthen kasbah-style homes and pre-Saharan climate.

Nkob historically functioned as a crossroads between caravan routes and mountain tribes.

Overnight in guesthouse.

Day 3

Bab n’Ali – The Cathedral of Stone

Transfer to Bab n’Ali, a dramatic volcanic rock formation rising like twin stone towers from the plateau. These formations belong to the Anti-Atlas geological belt, composed of Precambrian rock over 500 million years old.

Begin trekking across wide stone plains dotted with acacia trees.

Walking: 5–6 hours
Camp in open mountain terrain.

Day 4

Your Plan

Climb gradually toward the Ighazoun Plateau, one of the most panoramic sections of the Saghro range. The landscape feels lunar — black volcanic ridges, wind-carved rock, and vast silence.

The Saghro Mountains historically sheltered semi-nomadic Aït Atta tribes during seasonal migrations.

Walking: 6 hours
Wild camp.

Day 5

Canyon Descent & Oasis Transition

Descend into dry riverbeds and small seasonal oases. Palm groves appear suddenly between arid ridges, demonstrating the ecological contrast of pre-Saharan Morocco.

Camp near an oasis where mountain and desert climates overlap.

Walking: 5 hours.

Day 6

Toward the Sahara – Merzouga Dunes

Transfer toward Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. These wind-shaped dunes can rise up to 150 meters and form part of Morocco’s eastern Saharan erg system.

Ride camels into the dunes at sunset.

Overnight in desert camp.

Day 7

Desert Dawn & Return Route

Watch sunrise over shifting sand patterns shaped by wind. After breakfast, begin return journey toward Ouarzazate through desert plains and palm valleys.

Overnight in guesthouse.

Day 8

 Return to Marrakech

Cross the High Atlas back to Marrakech. End of Saghro Sahara Nomad Trek.
